Happy FearStyle Friday, everyone. This weeks post is about the film adaptation of Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark. I went to see an early showing of the horror film last week and all I have to say is that I loved it. I felt like it was brilliant in delivering the source material in a fresh way. I won't spoil the events of the film because it is still in theaters (and it was a great theater experience) but I will talk about the things I enjoyed most and the overall atmosphere the movie provided.
Scary Stories begins on Halloween night but the terror goes beyond the night of the dead as an ominous presence follows our hero's around their Pennsylvania town. Between the lighting of the film and the look of the characters the movie felt like November in the 60's. The kids cast, in my opinion, perfectly portrayed outsiders and social misfits and you felt for them as the story went on. All the characters, including the adults, were super believable unlike some other horror films that are supposed to take place in the past. The movie held a tone of a urban legend gone horribly wrong which was always how I felt while reading the books growing up. Ultimately, it was a fun watch and certainly fit for horror fans of all ages. I suggest seeing this one with friends, it is good fun.
The best thing about this movie was the monsters. Like I said I'm not going to spoil the film but most of us have seen the monsters on previews and the movies trailer. I'm going to tell you right now that they are just as scary as they seem on those clips. The best monster has to be the fat pale woman with the long hair and the petrifying smile. The whole scene is set up beautifully, building tension in a scene that makes your skin crawl and the hair on your neck stand up. Its not bloody or violent but oh so uncomfortable. I love it. All of the monsters and creepy crawlies in the movie are perfect. In the theater I heard moans and groans during scenes that scared you with more than just a jump, especially the spider scene. That story played out in a way that I saw and didn't see coming, if that makes sense. You'll get it once you've seen the movie and had read the story that the scene is based on. It's gross, terrifying and beautiful. That's what I enjoy, a movie that scares you without using jump scares. This movie was filled the brim with genuine horror but it had its moments of hilarity. Its that balance that makes this one a must see.
That's all I have for today. I hope you have enjoyed and sincerely hope you go and see this movie while it is still out. I feel like its one for all and a great movie experience. If you have seen this already then let me know how you feel about it. Did you love it or feel like I am giving far too much credit? Feel free to like, comment and share.
