Hello, horror fiends, and welcome to Weird Movie Wednesday. For those who noticed, I did not post anything this last Friday and with good reason; I moved. I'm not done moving either, but with my new surroundings I have been craving one movie and one movie only...Squirm. Squirm perfectly describes my new home. Let's talk about it.
Squirm is a classic creature feature about a couple of kids, a small town, a thunderstorm and power outage, and worms. Blood worms. One night, in a small rural town in Georgia, a thunderstorm knocks out all the power. The next day, residents recoop from the storm and try to get back to life as normal. The movie centers over a small family, an elderly mother and her two grown(ish) daughters. Jerry, the eldest of the two daughters, is expecting a guest from out of town. A city boy, Mick from New York. With the buses having to turn around from the damage from the storm, Jerry takes her neighbors bait worm truck to drive through the woods to pick him up. When the two meet, the run into town for some ice and to be harrassed by the overly suspicious of strangers locals. They both are into antiques and that's why he's even here. So, the story goes on and we don't see any worms until Mick gets bit by a worm fishing. The two later find a picked clean skeleton. Yet, it isn't until later in the movie that we see the worms in their horrific magnitude. These giant blood worms are being shot up from the ground by the electricity from the fallen power lines. The worms not only bite, they will pick your bones clean. Then end of the movie is magnificent. The worms only come out when its dark and they overtake the house. The mother dies and the other sister hides in a large trunk. The two love birds rest in a tree as their neighbor, who has the hot's for Jerry and has become sort of possessed by the worms, tries to attack them. He too gets attacked by the worms and the rest of them live happily ever after.
This was kind of a short run down of the film, but it has it's golden moments. The first one is the other sister, Elma. She is simply awesome, all gussied up in her finest, complete with these far out wicker heels. She is so cheesy, I love it. The next is a character named Rodger, the neighbor guy who has the hot's for Jerry. He is so hick and just plain weird, you could quote him for days. Now, there's a lot of details I didn't write about but what you should know is that the worms, although they are the central threat, aren't even what you watch the movie for. You watch for the atmosphere of the rural Georgia town, the hospitality (if you could even call it that) of the towns folk, and the general dialogue from the main characters. You could cut this movie to ribbons and still have enough stuff to laugh about the next time you watched it. I love it. Oh, and for a bonus fun fact, Squirm was based off of a novel of the same name. Cool, right? I just found out myself.
Today was brief but I hope you enjoyed, nonetheless. If you are familiar with this one then let me know what your thoughts are. Do you love it or do you think it's silly. Either way, feel free to chat. If you like what you read then let me know either down below or on my social medias. That's all for now and until next time, stay spooky.
