Welcome to a certain special Wednesday. I thought that we would do a little memorial to the late Luke Perry, who passed away only yesterday. I was shocked to hear of his passing after having followed the news of his massive stroke. It's been said that he was a kind and generous man who was likable on and off screen. He has left his mark on pop-culture with his role as Dylan McKay on the smash hit Beverly Hills, 90210. I thought that I would honor him by talking about his greatest contribution to horror history in the cult classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a 90's classic starring Kristy Swanson as the titular Buffy, an ordinary high school cheerleader who just so happens to slay vampires. The movie also stars the late Luke Perry as Oliver Pike, David Arquette, Donald Sutherland, and Paul Rubens. You know a movie is a winner when Pee-Wee Herman plays a vampire. As for a break down, I think that the introduction sentence of this paragraph pretty much sums it up. Buffy is a senior in high school and finds out that she is the next in a line of vampire slayers. So, between high school and cheer leading she has to put an end the the Vampires that are ruining her life. All that and the prom! What is a girl to do? Anyways, Luke Perry and David Arquette are buddies in this movie, Pike and Benny respectively. These two resent Buffy due to social constructs and the modern cliches of high school life in the 90's. One night, these two misfits are out when all of a sudden they are attacked by Pee-Wee Herman and Benny (Arquette) is ultimately turned into a vampire. He later goes to Pike's (Perry) house to try to turn him. He is eventually saved by Buffy's mentor and watcher, Merrick (Sutherland). Pike decides that he is going to leave town but his plans are ruined when Rubens comes back with an army of vampires. And through a sense of movie trickery, Pike and Buffy become partners in crime, ending the trail of terror the vampires had brought to their generally average home town. The movie ends at the school dance where the pair put and end to the vampires and ride off on a motorcycle into the moonlight.
After the success of this movie, the story and character Buffy took off becoming a staple of 90's horror. She would be played by modern day scream queen, Sarah Michelle Geller. This movie is special for me because it takes me back to being a little girl and watching quirky off-beat movies with my mom. Buffy was not a staple, but it was one that we all enjoyed every once in a while. It's silly and has a Romy and Michele vibe to it and I love that in a movie. It is special and I hope that you return to it every once in a while.
I also need to take some time to mention another passing in recent times. Kieth Flint, the front man to the alternative band Prodigy passed away yesterday also. He was eccentric and wild and I have never lived a life without his music. Prodigy is a band that has always been around in my house. I used to run to Fire starter and am constantly reminded of them every time I watch Charlies Angels. I'm a fan and his passing was shocking. He will be missed.
That's all I for today. I would like to finish by saying that no matter what it is you do in life do it with a good attitude and a kind heart. Make and create leaving the ones you love with nothing but lovely thoughts to keep you by. I love everything I try to do, even when I fail and I love you, so stay spooky friends. I will see you next time.
