Today I will be reviewing a movie that I recently saw. I will be doing this every Friday about movies that I love or ones that I just saw. It can be old, it can be new but one thing is for sure...it will be scary. This weeks post is about The Autopsy of Jane Doe. It is available on Netflix as of 1/1/2019 for those of you who have that service. Before we get to what I thought about this movie, a brief summary.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe is about father and son coroners and the autopsy they perform on one Jane Doe. As father and son attempt to close up shop one night the towns sheriff comes in with an urgent task for the duo; to determine the cause of death on Jane Doe by morning. The woman on the table is young, beautiful, and appears to have no visible marks or injuries. Perhaps the wounds are internal? There is only one way to find out. As the autopsy continues more and more clues are given about the young woman, but still the cause of death cannot be found. As they dissect further and further they come closer to a more sinister truth. Something malevolent has come with this body and has the intent to kill.
Disclaimer: Some details pertaining to the end of the movie will be ahead. So, SPOILER ALERT!!!
Let me start with saying that what I saw was NOT what I expected. I saw the trailer for this movie sometime in 2017 and they had me hooked. I thought it was going to be a true crime inspired movie, just based off the trailer alone. What I got instead was not bad but not what I expected. (Spoiler) The Autopsy of Jane Doe is a supernatural tale about a witch who transfers her soul into the innocent body of an unidentified woman. Ancient cloths revealing dates are found in the body of Doe. They indicate that she was being possessed by the spirit of not just a witch but a witch from the Salem Witch Trials. Having been punished in a grotesque manner, the witch is hellbent on revenge. What ends up happening is that the father and son connect all the dots and realize the peril they face. In an act of bravery the father sacrifices his life for his sons. The witch possesses his body, inflicting the same wounds from Jane Doe onto him. The son reluctantly kills his father with a stab to the heart in an effort to end the pain that the witch is causing him. Now, I failed to mention that the witch is causing hallucinations and other creepy happenings while these two try to find out what happened to Jane Doe. After the son kills his father he thinks he hears the sheriff coming to help him. He struggles to get outside and, due to the witches hallucinations, he falls over a railing to his death. End scene, right? Not quite. The sheriff does come and find the bodies. In order to wrap all this up, the bodies are sent to away with the witch being sent to a different mortuary. The very last scene of the movie is of the witch twitching, indicating that she is far from over. Hopefully, in my opinion, she will be over.
*Spoilers are over, if you skipped to the end*
Now I was ultimately disappointed and not just because I was mislead by the trailer (even though that has a lot to do with it). First of all, just by the opening scene alone I was under the impression that this movie was about a young woman who was in a grizzly crime and the COD needed to be discovered. Instead shes a witch? I don't know how these parallels connect. The only thing that I can think is that the semi-recent movie The VVitch was such a hit that the witch theme was needed to continue. It's that sort of Paranormal Activity phenomena. One was so good that now there needs to be a million of them that aren't so good. My only other complaint was that when I saw the trailer I don't feel like I got a good feeling of what the movie was going to be about. It was the imagery that drew me in initially. However, I do find this to be a big problem in new movies recently. In horror and non-horror alike. I will see a trailer for something and I will feel like I have no idea what is even supposed to be going on. Maybe its just me, let me know what you think about that.
On to what I did like about the film. First, I thought the performances of the two lead actors were good. The movie starred Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch and, in my humble opinion, I thought they were convincing as father and son coroners. Next would be the imagery. Like I said before, what drew me in in the first place was how creepy the movie looked. Nothing was fully colored. The reds were black and everything looked pale, gritty, and hauntingly beautiful. I think, overall, I would have liked the movie more if the witch theme had been more fully executed or if the movie was aimed at a different theme entirely. All in all, I would say that it's a good movie, especially for a Netflix find. Its a fun watch and maybe now that you know a little more about it you might be able to enjoy it for what it is.
I hope you enjoyed what you have read here today and I hope you give this title a chance. If you have seen it, how did you like it? Do you agree with me or do you think I am completely off base?
