Happy 10 year Anniversary, Friday the 13th (remake)! Whoa, I didn't mean to spring this one up on ya. Where has the time gone? Seem's like only yesterday we were all disappointed with a below average remake of a beloved horror icon. I have lightened up on my dislike of remade horror movies recently, but I can't with this one. I am happy that it was remade for an audience of viewers who may not have been familiar with Jason and Camp Crystal Lake but for the rest of us, we were less than stoked. Let's go through this together.
Let's begin by stating what this movie really is not really a remake and more of a re-imagining of the original story. I read that original idea for this movie was to give Jason more of an origin story. Not a bad idea if you totally ignore the fact that Jason's origin is given to you in the first movie...and the second...and the third. What I am getting at is that in every Friday the 13th film we are reminded of how Jason came to be. However, I do think that a story about the in between time from when his mother died and how he came to start slaughtering teens would be really rad and that's where my appreciation for this movie begins and ends.
The intentions of the film are good, don't get me wrong. Like I said, I have lightened up on horror remakes...remakes in general for that matter. It brings a classic story to people who may have never seen the originals. Ultimately, you should always see the original. That's a must. But don't be afraid to branch out. With all that said, Friday the 13th remake does good with showing Jason watch as his mother is decapitated in the beginning of the film. It takes you right back to the original. It's a wonderful homage. And the mask, oh boy. They take his look from Friday the 13th Part III and I think he looks great. Plus, they do a part II thing with one of the campers looking like his mom and he ,being hypnotized by that, holds her captive. However the homages end there, really. The story is flat and boring, not really bringing anything new to the chopping block. Kids come back to the camp to look for their friend and one by one they all get slashed.
My final thought is this. When this movie came out I was about 12 years old and I watched it with my family, aunt, cousins and all. Now, we all know what we are in for, we know that there is going to be some promiscuity. It's guaranteed. I mean, even if you haven't seen the original, you know the patterns of a slasher movie. Or at least, I hope you do. However, this movie was far too dirty for a young girl of 12. I had seen the originals and they are dirty, but not as dirty as this one. It was like every few minuets I had to look away from the screen. That was super weird with my mom sitting right next to me. Not to mention my aunt and my older cousins. It was not good for a young horror fan such as myself. And it was for reason's like that that I disliked just about every horror remake that came out of the theater. Now is a little different. If there is a horror remake I don't like it has less to do with the gratuitous nudity and more to do with a plot-hole filled story line, because sometimes nudity is necessary (but that is a different topic for another day).
We have come to the end. I urge you to give this one a view, even if I don't really like it, because I don't like it doesn't mean you won't. So, give it a go. Shoot, most of you have probably seen it. It's not that old. If you have, then tell me how you like it. Do you love it and think that I am being unreasonable? Do you love remakes? Hate them? What do you have to say? If you like what you read here then drop me line.
