"Warriors, come out to play."
Welcome Warriors to the Warriors 40th Anniversary. This movie is such a cult classic that it has been recreated on The Simpson's and you know you've made it as a movie when that happens. The movie stars Michael Beck, Deborah Van Valkenburgh, and James Remar (see my connection to Xanadu?) and was negatively reviewed back in 1979 as "lacking realism and stilted dialogue". It wasn't until over 30 years later that film critics re-reviewed the film, giving it 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. It seems that people just weren't ready for Warriors back in the 70's, but 40 years later The Warriors gets the recognition that it deserves.
The Warriors is about all the Gangs in New York meeting at a midnight summit held by Cyrus, leader of the Gramercy Riffs, the most powerful gang in New York. Cyrus asks that everyone come unarmed to the meeting to avoid violence as he plans to enforce a citywide truce in order to overpower the police, allowing the gangs to take over the city. Most dig the idea, but there is someone in the crowd who can't jive, resulting in the death of Cyrus. The shooting is then blamed on the Warriors. The Warriors, unaware that they have been framed, leave the city. It is only until a hit on them has been aired on the radio that they find out about the murder implication. The leader of the Warriors, Swan makes a plan for the gang to head back home. In order to make it home, the gang must fight their way through every gang on their pursuit. Not to mention that the police are on their trail, too. Eventually, they make it back to their turf where they are met by Luther, the leader of the Rouges. It is here where Luther confesses to the murder of Cyrus, stating that he does these kinds of things for the thrill of the kill. Luther is ultimately taken down by Swan and is dragged away by the Riffs. The Riffs praise and acknowledge the courage and skill of the Warriors. The hit on them is called off the radio and the Warrior's walk off into the sunset.
The thing I love the most about this movie is the overall look. I know I say this a lot, but there is something captivating about the wardrobe choices of all the gangs, the baseball furies especially. Other than the warriors, the baseball furies are my favorite gang. They are wearing traditional baseball uniforms and striking face paint that really makes them stand out. All in all, everything is super 70's and who doesn't love that?
Another thing about the movie that stands out in my mind is the DJ on the radio. You never see her whole face and she has this very soothing voice. She would get on the radio every once and a while and tell everyone what was going on. Pretty much, she's the narrator of the story and the coolest one at that.
Finally, I enjoy the diversity of the gangs, especially the girl gang. There's this great line in the film where the Warrior's are hanging with the Lizzie's and one of the girl's pulls a knife. One of the Warriors yells out, "the chicks are packed!" and they scatter. It's really funny and over the top and it's stuff like that makes this movie Classic, in my opinion. That's just one example, too. There is a wide array of different gangs in this movie. I did some research and found that there is 21 gangs in total. There's a punk'd out gang on skates, a gang of orphans, boppers, hurricanes, the Jones street boys, the savage Huns, just so many different types of gangs you almost can't keep track. I think that the whole story is a really interesting and props to the creators for making all the different gangs that are featured in this film and the ones that didn't make it to my list.
To wrap this up let me just say happy anniversary, Warriors. Here's to 40 years and I just know that I will be just as stoked to talk about this movie in another 10.
